EUNICE -- The Sacred Heart Trojan baseball team took to the road on Monday to face off against rival St. Ed’s in a non-district game. Unfortunately for the Trojans, St. Ed’s was up to the task, as they stole a close 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart.
With the loss, the Trojans fall to 9-10-1 on the season. Sacred Heart will host cross-parish Mamou on Monday. Game time is set for 4:30.
Following an up and down inning from Sacred Heart, St. Ed’s took the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring a single run. Jack Miller reached on a lead off single.
An error by the Trojan defense put Carter Lejeune at first base and allowed Miller to reach third. Brock Bieber grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, but Miller was able to cross the plate on the play.
St. Ed’s held Sacred Heart bats at bay in the top of the second and then proceeded to add to their lead by plating another solo run in the bottom half of the inning. Ian Dupre was hit by a pitch to begin the Blue Jay at bat.
After a stolen base, Dupre reached third on a single off of the bat of Will Turk. Dupre then scored the exact same way Miller did the inning before; on a double play by the Trojans.
In the top of the third, Sacred Heart’s Drew Bordelon doubled with two outs, but the Trojan offense could not capitalize, stranding Bordelon on the bag.
The Blue Jays added their final run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning. Lejeune tripled in the lead off role and later scored on an error by the Sacred Heart defense.
St. Ed’s starting pitcher Dawson Ardoin did a good job of keeping the Trojan offense at bay for most of the game. The only hiccup from Ardoin came in the top of the fifth when he allowed the only Sacred Heart run of the game.
Gabe Fontenot reached on an error to lead off the inning. Alec Gotro was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second.
Both Fontenot and Gotro moved up on stolen bases. An error by the Blue Jay defense off the bat of Cannon Beaver allowed Fontenot to cross the plate. From that point on, the Trojans could not muster any other offense.
Bordelon was 1 for 3 at the plate to lead the way for Sacred Heart.
