VILLE PLATTE -- It was a total team effort that allowed the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans to fly past the Westminster Lady Crusaders in a, 12-2, run rule win Tuesday afternoon.
On the day, the Lady Trojans slugged their way to 12 hits, while committing only one error, as Camille Fontenot and Aubrey Foret combined to strike out seven on the mound.
With the win, Sacred Heart improved to 9-4 on the year and is 1-0 in District 5-1A play. The Lady Trojans were scheduled to travel to Catholic of Pointe Coupee yesterday and take to the road tomorrow to face off against Class 4A powerhouse St. Thomas More.
After allowing a Westminster runner to second base in the top of the first, the Sacred Heart defense shut down the Lady Crusader threat and headed to the plate.
The Lady Trojans managed to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but came away empty handed, leaving the scoreboard with goose eggs after one inning of play.
However, Sacred Heart would pick things up offensively in the bottom of the second inning. Camille Fontenot singled to lead off and would move to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt from Natalie LeBas.
A passed ball moved Fontenot to third base. Blaire Lafleur drew the one out walk, putting runners at first and third. Another passed ball scored Fontenot and gave Lafleur second base.
Sydnie Soileau walked and along with Lafleur would score on a triple into left-center field off of the bat of Emilyse Bergeron. A sacrifice fly from Olivia Hernandez plated Bergeron and gave the Lady Trojans an early 4-0 lead.
Westminster cut into the lead in the top of the third, scoring a solo run. However, Sacred Heart would answer with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning.
Camille Soileau singled and moved all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Tobie Landry. Soileau reached home plate on a single by Fontenot, bringing the Lady Trojan advantage back to four runs.
The Lady Crusaders added another run to their total in the top of the fourth inning. Just two at-bats later and Sacred Heart would blow the game wide open with seven more runs.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Landry drew a lead off walk and was brought home on a triple by Fontenot. LeBas would follow with a single, scoring Fontenot. Lafleur walked and moved over an extra base along with LeBas on a passed ball.
Soileau singled to right-center field, plating both LeBas and Lafleur. Bergeron repeated her earlier performance, tripling once again and bringing home Soileau.
Bergeron scored on a single by Hernandez, giving the Lady Trojans their twelfth run and ending the game in run-rule fashion.
Fontenot led the way for Sacred Heart at the plate, going three for three with a triple and two RBI. Bergeron was two for four with two triples, three RBI and two runs scored.
Fontenot went three innings on the hill, striking out three, while giving up two walks and one hit.
