OXFORD, Miss. – An outstanding week for Julia Johnson got even better Wednesday, as the freshman from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, was named SEC Golfer of the Week.
Johnson is the first Rebel to win SEC Golfer of the Week since Stani Schiavone won it in 2015, and she’s just the second freshman ever to win it for Ole Miss and the first since Adrienne White in 2004.
At the Rebel Beach Invitational in Las Vegas, Johnson shot a 2-under (70) in the final round and went even par (216) over 54 holes for her second collegiate victory, carding 14 birdies along the way.
Johnson entered the final 18 holes in Las Vegas at fourth on the leaderboard, and she came out on top, sharing the individual championship with BYU’s Kendra Dalton. “Julia had a lot of birdies this week and didn’t make many errors, so it was another top-notch effort and we are all so proud of her,” Henkes said.
She became the first Rebel freshman to win two tournaments in a single season and, in doing so, tied the program record for the most individual titles in a single season. That record was set by Sarah Britt in the 1992-93 season.
“Julia has played outstanding golf for the Rebels,” said head coach Kory Henkes. “She plays smart golf, is a stellar iron player, and makes a lot of birdies. She knows her abilities on the golf course and really makes the most out of every round she plays. She stays true to her game plan that we map out in the practice round and the results speak for themselves.”
Johnson leads the Rebels in nearly every statistical category. She has totaled 67 birdies in six tournaments this season, as well as 10 rounds at par or under. Her stroke average of 72.7 also leads Ole Miss for the 2017-18 season.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Johnson said. “I’m very grateful to be recognized by my conference. It’s such an honor to play in the SEC and represent my school. Our team puts in so much work day in and day out, and to be recognized for all that hard work is a great feeling.”
