Parish teams struggle to find success in recent hard court action

Over the past week, several of the parish basketball teams took to the floor either trying to bring home much needed power points or hoping to get a foothold in district as league play begins.
In girl’s action, the Pine Prairie girls took to the floor for two tough district contests. The Lady Panthers were on the road at Iota and came home for a match-up with Crowley.
Unfortunately, Pine Prairie could not muster any offense in both games falling to Iota 71-37 and losing to Crowley 44-23.
Against Iota the Lady Panthers fell behind quickly 20-6 after one quarter of play and 39-12 at the end of the first half.
The third quarter saw a much improved offensive production from Pine Prairie, as they produced 18 points. But, that offense was still not enough to overcome the Lady Bulldog lead.
Thursday’s game against Crowley did not go they way that head coach Renotta Edwards would have liked. Pine Prairie was unable to produce very much in the way of offense, only scoring nine points total in the first half and trailed 30-9.
The second half was better for the Lady Panthers as they outscored Crowley 10-7 in the third quarter. However, the first half deficit was too much to overcome.
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans traveled to East Beauregard Thursday night for a non-district match-up with the Beauregard parish version of the Lady Trojans. It was the defensive effort of East Beauregard and the lack of offense that led to the 50-24 loss for Sacred Heart.
East Beauregard was able to double up Sacred Heart in terms of points, 16-8, in the first quarter. Sacred Heart was able to knock in seven points in the second quarter, but still found themselves 14 points behind, 29-15, as the first half closed out.
The third quarter squashed any hope of a Sacred Heart comeback, as the Lady Trojans were able to only find the basket for two points. Sacred Heart outscored East Beauregard 7-4 in the final quarter, but it was too little too late.
A trip to Alexandria to take on the ASH Lady Trojans was not what the doctor ordered for Ville Platte High, as the Lady Bulldogs took a bitter 75-29 non-district loss.
Ville Platte could not find any offense to speak of throughout the game, scoring in single digits in every quarter. In fact out of the 29 total points scored, Jakiah Thomas pumped in 21 of those points.
In boy’s action, the Pine Prairie boys followed their overtime win on Tuesday with another extra frame victory, 60-54, over Welsh on Wednesday.
The Panthers trailed 13-7 after one quarter and 23-22 at the half.
The two teams were evenly matched in the third quarter, each scoring 16 points. But, a one point advantage in the final period allowed Pine Prairie to send the game into overtime, where they outscored the Greyhounds 12-6.
Finally, the Ville Platte Bulldogs went on the road to face off against the Alexandria Trojans in non-district action on Tuesday night.
It was the unsteady play of the offense that killed any hope of a Bulldog comeback, as the Trojans were able to come away with a 56-50 win.
