PINE PRAIRIE -- Sometimes a team just cannot find the answers needed to stop the momentum that your opponent has gained.
Such is the case for both the Pine Prairie Panthers and Lady Panthers as they were taken down by the Northwest Raiders and Lady Raiders Friday night.
In the initial game of the night, the Lady Panthers hung on for a short time in the first quarter but were unable to stay within striking distance, losing 63-32.
The Lady Panthers finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-18 and a district record of 4-10.
In the boys’ game, the Panthers never really got things going offensively, falling behind very early on in a 88-52 loss.
The Panthers dropped to 12-13 on the year and 5-7 in District 5-3A. Pine Prairie will travel to Iota tomorrow to take on the Bulldogs in league action.
The girls’ contest started well for the home standing Lady Panthers, as Asia George completed a three-point play and Kameron Zachary Allen knocked down a bucket to give Pine Prairie the early 5-0 lead.
After the two teams exchanged baskets, the Lady Raiders began to assert themselves on the offensive boards, picking up three more baskets and getting to the line four times in the next 1:40.
Fortunately, for the Lady Panthers, Northwest was only able to hit on two of eight free throws during that stretch, giving the Lady Raiders an 8-7 lead at the 3:43 mark of the first quarter.
However, Northwest’s relentless defensive pressure and rebounding allowed the Lady Raiders to go on a 9-0 run over the next 2:20.
With nine seconds left in the period, Pine Prairie’s Lanie Ekhart popped the nets for two points, cutting the Northwest lead down to 10 points, 19-9. But, that shot was answered just eight seconds later, as the Lady Raiders banked a three-point attempt at the buzzer to increase the advantage back up to 13 points.
The second quarter saw the Lady Panthers fighting to get back into the game. Nevertheless, it seemed that every time the Lady Panthers would put points up, Northwest was there to respond.
The 13 point lead stayed up until two minutes to go before half. Pine Prairie had the chance to cut into that lead, as they were able to go to the line for two huge one and one opportunities. Regrettably, the Lady Panthers were unable to connect on those shots.
The Lady Raiders finished out the half on a 4-0 run to give them a 31-14 lead heading into the locker room.
As the third quarter began, Pine Prairie once again looked to gain some ground on Northwest. And once again, the Lady Raiders kept the Lady Panthers at bay with responding shots. Despite that, Pine Prairie was able to slice into the Northwest advantage, bringing it down to 12 points, 37-25, at the 4:40 mark.
The Lady Raiders countered with a 12-0 run to close out the quarter and finished the game out in the final period.
Allen led all Lady Panthers with 13 points.
The night cap started inconspicuously on the offensive side of the floor for both the Panthers and the Raiders, as the two teams could not find the bottom of the net for the opening 1:15 of the game.
