PORT BARRE -- The Mamou Demons and Lady Demons faced off here Wednesday night against the Port Barre Devils and Lady Devils in two nail biting close games.
The Lady Demons came on top in their showing, beating out the Lady Devils 31-29. With the win, Mamou improves to 6-8 on the season and are 1-1 in district play.
The Demons were not as fortunate, losing to the Devils 42-41. With the loss, Mamou drops to 7-13 and 0-1 in district play.
In the girl’s contest, both teams got off to really slow starts offensively. Mamou only managed to pick up six points in the first quarter, but held Port Barre to five total points to take a one point advantage after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw more offensive action from both teams. The Lady Demons almost doubled their point total from the previous period, scoring 11 points. The Lady Devils were two points away from making it a wash in the second quarter, scoring nine points.
In the third period, Port Barre tried to lessen the gap, but Mamou’s Brianna Thibodaux ensured the Lady Demon’s lead did not evaporate. Thibodaux knocked down all of Mamou’s seven points in the quarter, outscoring the Lady Devils by herself 7-5 to give the Lady Demons a 24-19 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Lady Devils started off the fourth period strongly with four quick points cutting the score down to 24-23. The Lady Demons were able to pick up the pace after the initial Lady Devil flurry, retaliating with four points of their own to bring the lead to 28-23 with 2:50 left in the contest. That lead would remain for the next 1:10.
The final 1:40 of the game became a long distance shooting contest, as the two teams exchanged three-point baskets. In the end, Port Barre could not overcome the deficit, giving Mamou a league win.
Thibodaux led all Lady Demons with 17 points.
In the boy’s contest, both Mamou and Port Barre hit the ground running from the start. With just two minutes gone in the game, Port Barre led 4-3.
After the fast-paced start both teams began to settle in on offense. Mamou found their shooting rhythm, however, scoring 11 unanswered points in the final minutes of the opening period to take a 14-9 lead as the horn sounded.
The first quarter was a shoot out, but the second quarter definitely became more quiet. Port Barre out paced Mamou 9-2, with all of the Red Devil points coming out of the hands of one player. As the teams headed into the locker room, Port Barre held a 18-16 lead.
Just like the second quarter, the third period showed much of the same, with the Red Devils owning the advantage. With a 12-9 edge in the quarter, Port Barre now led 30-25 heading into the final period.
Mamou, sensing a new found urgency, made a charge in the final quarter. The Demons tied things up at 39-39 with 56 seconds left to go. But, in the end Mamou did not have enough power to finish out the comeback.
