MAMOU -- The Mamou Demons and Lady Demons found themselves in non-district action over the past week and were able to gain a measure of success, as they headed into the district season.
For the Lady Demons, a split was all that Mamou could come up with as they fell to the Oakdale Lady Warriors 61-33 on Friday night and responded with a decisive 44-17 win over the Port Barre Lady Devils to begin district.
Going 1-1 over the last two games gives the Lady Demons a 4-9 overall record and a 1-0 district mark.
On the other hand, the Demons found themselves with two wins in a row, trouncing the Oakdale Warriors 79-46 and defeating the Port Barre Devils 69-44.
With the duo of victories, Mamou improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in District 5-3A play.
Against the Lady Warriors, the Lady Demons could not adjust to Oakdale’s change in defense and found themselves behind 8-3 going into the game’s first time out at the 6:08 mark and down 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Mamou tried to keep it relatively close in the second quarter before Oakdale ran away with things. The Lady Demons found themselves down 33-15 at the close of the first half and never were able to get back into the game.
The opposite happened in their contest with Port Barre. Mamou jumped out to a 16-6 lead after one quarter of play and led 33-14 at the half.
With the bench in most of the second half, the Lady Demons outscored the Lady Devils 11-3 over the last two periods.
In their game against Oakdale, Mamou employed a suffocating defense to take a 28-11 lead at the end of the initial quarter. The carnage continued into the second quarter as Trevor Atchinson drilled two three-pointers allowing the Demons to go into the locker room with a 43-21 advantage.
The second half was a carbon copy of the first, as Mamou maintained the defensive pressure to maintain the punishing advantage the rest of the game.
The Demons did not hold back on the Red Devils either on Tuesday night. Mamou burst out to a 25-6 lead after one quarter of play and held a 43-26 lead at the half.
A 26-18 advantage over the final two periods allowed the Demons to pick up their first district win.
