MAMOU -- It has been an up and down season all year long for the Mamou High baseball team, and the end of the year was no exception.
The Demons closed out 2018 by going 0-2 this past week in non-district action, losing to Welsh 2-1 on Tuesday and falling to Westminster 5-3 on Thursday.
With the split, Mamou finished the year with an overall record of 13-20 and a district record of 5-9. As of Friday night, the Demons were unofficially the No. 23 team in terms of power ranking in Class 3A.
If that holds up when the official ranking comes out today, Mamou would play the No. 10 team, which, unofficially is Jena High School. Playoffs start tomorrow or Tuesday for Class 3A.
Despite the loss on Tuesday, the Demons got a seven inning gem on the mound from Tanner Atchinson against Welsh. Atchinson went the distance, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out five and walking three.
The only problem was that Mamou could not put together a big inning offensively. The Demons left 10 runners on base, including eight in scoring position.
Welsh got on the board first in the top of the third inning by plating a single run. Mamou tied the game up in the top of the fourth when Devin Boone reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on an error and came home on a single by Mason Reed.
Things stayed the same until the top of the sixth. The Greyhounds were able to manufacture the winning run on a walk, a stolen base and a run scoring single.
On Thursday, the Demons fell behind early and could never get back into the game, losing to Westminster in the final contest of the year.
The Crusaders put together a decent inning at the plate, picking up two big runs to take the early lead.
Mamou came back in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the Westminster lead in half as they plated a single run. With one out, Tanner Rougeau singled to left field. Blake Boone belted a pitch to right-center field for a double, scoring Rougeau. However, a fly out and a ground out prevented the Demons from adding any more runs.
The Crusaders tacked on another run in the top of the fourth. But, Mamou matched that in the bottom half of the inning.
With two outs, Gavin Pommier singled and stole second base. Daylon Ardoin singled home Pommier for the only run of the at bat.
Westminster put the game away in the top of the sixth by knocking home two more runs.
The Demons tried to make it interesting in the bottom of the seventh, but was held to only one run. Rougeau reached first on a hit by pitch and got to second on a passed ball.
Two ground outs later, Rougeau came home to score. Never-the-less, it was not enough to overcome the deficit held by the Crusaders.
