IOWA -- It was just not meant to be for the Mamou Demons in 2018.
The No. 23 seeded Demons ended their season here Tuesday afternoon when they fell to the No. 10 seeded Iowa Yellow Jackets by the scored of 9-2.
With the loss, Mamou finishes the year with an overall record of 13-21.
“I thought we started the year strong,” stated Mamou head coach Greg Fontenot. “But, after week two, we ran into a rash of injuries that just prolonged throughout the rest of the season. We just had some bad luck and hopefully the underclassmen will remember this in the off season and it will motivate them when we come back to start workouts”
“With key guys being hurt throughout the year, it stopped us from being able to mix up the line-up and put people at other positions when we had different arms on the mound,” Fontenot continued. “For example, we had to play a seventh grader at second base for the last ten games. Even though I thought he did a tremendous job for us, it is hard to compete in Class 3A with younger players on the field.”
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after one inning of play and increased that advantage to 7-0 after the fourth inning, scoring three more in the second and adding three in the bottom of the fourth.
Mamou got their first run of the game in the top of the sixth when Tucker Rougeau singled to lead off the inning, stole second base and reached home on a base hit off of the bat of Blake Boone.
Iowa tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to increase the lead to 9-1.
The Demons scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Tanner Atchinson reached on an error and later scored on a single from Rougeau.
