LSU named No. 1; Tigers, Tech, ULL, Tulane all head to bowls

The College Football Playoff selection committee has met and the decision as to who the four teams are heading into the semi-finals on December 28 has been reached.
For LSU Tiger fans around the country, a sigh of relief can be heard, as the committee has selected the boys in purple and gold as the No. 1 seed overall. The Tigers (13-0) will line up against the No. 4 seed Oklahoma Sooners (12-1) in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl for the right to move on to the National Championship game on January 13.
After sitting at No. 2 in the CFP poll before the SEC Championship game, LSU vaulted over Ohio State for the top seed. The Buckeyes claimed the No. 2 spot in the ranking, while the Clemson Tigers found themselves in the No. 3 slot. Ohio State and Clemson will tangle in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl the same day that the Tigers and Sooners are set to battle each other.
Going into the final CFP ranking, there was a lot of speculation as to whether LSU would be placed ahead of the Buckeyes. But, with their decisive 37-10 win over Georgia in the conference title game, the committee saw fit to hand the Tigers the top spot.
LSU will face Oklahoma for only the third time in the two school’s history. Both of those games came in the Sugar Bowl, with the Sooners taking a 35-0 win over the Tigers in the 1950 game and LSU scoring a 21-14 win over Oklahoma in the 2004 contest.
However, the Tigers will see a familiar face when the two teams get after it this time around, as Sooner quarterback Jalen Hurts has battled against LSU on two other occasions. The grad transfer from Alabama took down the Tigers twice while the starter with the Crimson Tide.
Oklahoma earned the right to have a place in the CFP by virtue of their 30-23 win over the Baylor Bears in the Big 12 championship game. This will be the fourth year that the Sooners have found themselves in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, three other Louisiana football programs were awarded the opportunity to participate in one of the remaining bowls. First up, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will face off against the Miami Hurricanes in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl scheduled to take place on December 26 in Shreveport.
The Bulldogs finished 9-3 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. Miami ended the year with an even 6-6 mark.
On January 4, the Tulane Green Wave will go bowling against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl held in Fort Worth, Texas. Tulane finished their season with a record of 6-6.
Finally, the ULL Ragin Cajuns will travel down to Mobile, Alabama to take on the Miami (OH) Redhawks in the Lending Tree Bowl. ULL had their best season ever, finishing with a 10-3 record.
