EUNICE -- LSU Eunice’s scheduled game at Southern-Shreveport that was supposed to happen yesterday was forfeited by the Jaguars due to “unforeseen circumstances”. The Bengals will receive a win for the cancellation.
Meanwhile, The Bengals (17-2) survived a physical start to MISS-LOU Conference play with 73 to 64 win over Baton Rouge Community College to collect their fourteenth win in a row.
It certainly seemed like LSUE was up to its old tricks after storming out to a quick 9-0 lead to start the game. The Bears answered right back to make it 11-10 LSUE midway through the first quarter. It was the closest the game would be all night.
The two teams traded blows throughout the majority of the first half with LSUE never leading by more than ten until midway through the second quarter. De’Asia Dixon’s five consecutive points were part of a key 11-2 run to finally push the edge past double digits, 33-20.
The Bengals went into the locker rooms up 39-26 with Whitney Landry’s seven points leading the way. The Iota High product finished with a career and team-high 17 points.
LSUE pulled away thanks to a late surge in the third quarter. The Bengals clung to a six-point edge after Celica Sterling’s three-pointer made it 46-40. Saucier responded right away by banging home a trifecta of her own to key in an 11-0 run to close the quarter and push the Bengals’ lead to 57-43.
The lead ballooned to 19 after an 8-3 mini-run to start the fourth quarter, 65-46. It was LSU Eunice’s largest lead of the game. The Bears would still not go away. Baton Rouge’s Sterling and Kayla Watson combined for 14 points in the final frame to cut down the LSUE lead to 67-60 with under two minutes to play. Whitney Landry responded by knocking down a straight away three to give the Bengals some final breathing room.
The Bears duo of Sterling and Watson combined for 47 of the team’s 64 points.
Sissy Saucier was the only other Bengal in double-digits, scoring ten points on the evening.
LSUE will now turn its attention to Delgado CC on Wednesday, February 7. Tip-off from New Orleans is scheduled for 6:00PM..
