VILLE PLATTE -- The District 5-1A season continued for the Sacred Heart Trojans and Lady Trojans, as they hosted Westminster Friday night.
The games can only be described as bitter-sweet as the Lady Trojans defeated Westminster by 20 points, 55-35, while the boys were defeated by 26 points, 74-48.
Despite the win, the Lady Trojans did not perform well in all four quarters. The initial period was owned by the opposing team, as the Lady Crusaders led by three points, 12-9, when the quarter came to a close.
The second quarter was much different for the Lady Trojans, as the team began to gain positive traction in their efforts to defeat Westminster. Behind the three-point shooting of senior guard Shani Fontenot, who drained two shots from beyond the arc, Sacred Heart was able to head into the locker room up by 10 points, 30-20.
Once the Lady Trojans returned to the court for the final two periods of play, they wasted no time at all. In the first four minutes of the third quarter Sacred Heart added eight more points to their total, giving them a 38-26 lead. Meanwhile Westminster was only able to find the basket twice in that same time frame.
As the quarter continued to move, the Lady Trojans found themselves moving in a similar direction. By the time the horn had sounded to end the period, Sacred Heart held a 19 point advantage, 48-29.
With the start of the final quarter, the Lady Crusaders led off with a nice three-point basket. However, there was still much ground to cover before any real distance would be made. Fortunately, for the hard working Lady Trojans that ground was barely touched as the remainder of the time played we only see Westminster score three more points.
In the boys’ contest, the Trojans started very slowly on the offensive end of the floor. As the first quarter came to a close, Sacred Heart found themselves in a 19-10 hole.
The Trojans’ luck did not seem to change heading into the second period, as the Crusader continue to dominate on all sides and close the first half with a 18 point advantage, 35-17.
After the intermission, Sacred Heart tried to fight their way back into the game, but Westminster would not allow it to occur, out scoring the Trojans 39-31 down the stretch.
