VILLE PLATTE -- Despite trailing early on in the ball game, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans were able to put crooked numbers up on the scoreboard in three of their six at-bats to blow away the St. Ed’s Lady Jays, 11-3, Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Trojans are now 3-0 on the season and will take on intra-parish rival Pine Prairie on the road Wednesday after competing in the Oakdale Tournament this weekend.
Things did not look good for Sacred Heart in the first two innings of play. St. Ed’s got their lead off batter on base via an error in the top of the first inning. A sacrifice bunt pushed her to second base. However, Lady Trojan starting pitcher Camille Fontenot settled down long enough to retire the next two batters.
The Lady Trojans did not fare well in the bottom of the first, as they were sent down in order.
In the top of the second, the Lady Blue Jays cranked things up offensively. Olivia Clark drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a single. After a line out to third base, Clark would score on the next base hit.
St. Ed’s got one more base hit two batters later to load the bases with two outs. But, Fontenot retired the side by inducing a ground out to third baseman Emilyse Bergeron.
Sacred Heart did get a runner on base in the bottom of the second on a triple by Karli Fontenot. Nevertheless, Fontenot was left stranded at the bag when the offense failed to get her across the plate.
After holding St. Ed’s scoreless in the top of the third, the Lady Trojan bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. Camille Fontenot reached base on a single, after the lead off batter Camille Soileau flied out to center field.
Sydnie Soileau followed that up with a single of her own, putting runners at first and second with one out. An error and a fielder’s choice in the next two at-bats scored Fontenot and put runners at second and third.
Karli Fontenot drove a ball into deep right field, allowing Sydni Soileau to score on the tag up and allowed Bergeron to advance to third. Another fielder’s choice put Tobie Landry at first base.
Landry stole second base and gave Sacred Heart runners at second and third with two outs. Olivia Hernandez promptly drove a 1-1 pitch into center field for a two out single, scoring Bergeron and Landry. With that inning, the Lady Trojans led 4-1.
The Lady Blue Jays responded in the top of the fourth with three more runs to cut the Sacred Heart lead down to one.
The Lady Trojans did not blink. In the bottom of that same inning, Camille Soileau laced a one out single into left field and was followed by an inside the park home run by Camille Fontenot to stretch the Sacred Heart lead to 6-3.
From that point on it was all Lady Trojans, as they picked up four more runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to ice the game.
Camille Fontenot ended the game going two for four with two RBI.
