Lady Panthers slip past Lady Demons in district action

MAMOU -- After a thirty minute delay to start the game, waiting on umpires, the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers held off the hard charging Mamou Lady Demons in a 7-5 win Thursday evening.
With the win, the Lady Panthers remain perfect on the year at 7-0 and are now 2-0 in District 5-3A.
The Lady Demons fell to 4-2 in the regular season and 0-2 in league play.
Pine Prairie got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. After Brianna Wall lined out to short stop, Allie Fontenot tripled to the right-center field gap.
Asia George reached base on a fielder’s choice and then took second on a steal. Kailey Soileau then doubled into center field, plating Fontenot and George giving the Lady Panthers the early 2-0 lead.
Mamou returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Sophie Fritz singled with one out and was moved to second base on a single from Hannah Israel.
The two base runners moved up to second and third on an errant throw in from the outfield and scored when Angel Menier singled to left field.
Pine Prairie responded in the top of the third by adding two more runs. Jacie McFarlain led things off with a single and scored on a Maycie Hardy triple into the gap in right-center field. Hardy would come across the plate when Tori Johnson grounded out to second base.
Mamou cut the lead down to 4-3 in the bottom of the third. Madi Fontenot singled as the lead off hitter. Back-to-back singles followed from Dacia Richard and Taylor Douget, allowing Fontenot to score.
Neither team could put up any points in the fourth inning, but the Lady Panthers were able to strike again in the bottom of the fifth. McFarlain doubled and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt off of the bat of Hardy.
Johnson walked and stole second base, putting runners at second and third with one out. A fielder’s choice put Wall at first, loading the bases for Fontenot, who singled in McFarlain and Johnson to give Pine Prairie a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Demons cut the lead down to one run once again when Menier and Israel both scored on an error.
The Lady Panthers added a solo run in the top of the seventh when Wall scored on a single from George. Mamou rallied in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second, but could not push the runs needed across to send the game into extra innings.
