EUNICE -- On Wednesday night the Mamou Demons hosted the Church Point Bears in a District 5-3A contest with the hopes of gaining some positive ground going into the playoffs next week.
Fortunately for the Demons, their wishes came true as they basically closed out the game in the third quarter, taking down the Bears by 14 points, 74-60.
With the win, Mamou is now 14-7 on the season and 10-3 in league play. The Demons were scheduled to travel to Prairie Rhonde on Friday to take on the Northwest Raiders.
The Gazette will have complete coverage of the game in Thursday’s edition.
The first quarter did not start off as well as Mamou had hoped for. Church Point out played the Demons on both the offensive and defensive sides of the floor to take a 7-1 lead within the initial 2:10 of the game.
The Demons answered swiftly and effectively, running off the next seven points, to take an 8-7 lead. The two clubs exchanged buckets for the remaining four minutes of the period, with Mamou owning a 20-19 lead as the quarter came to a close.
After the Demons knocked down a two-point basket to begin the second quarter, the Bears collected the next five points to take a 24-22 lead at the 6:27 mark. Like two heavy weight prize fighters, Mamou and Church Point traded blow for blow the rest of the period. By the time the horn sounded to end the first half, the Bears held a two-point advantage, 43-41.
Coming back on to the court to start the second half, Mamou had some new plans to execute if they were going to gain any type of serious lead. Those plans began to take root, as the Demons jumped out to a 48-45 lead in the first three minutes of the period.
After a Church Point bucket cut the lead back down to one point, Mamou went on an offensive rampage, burning the nets for 10 unanswered points, including two three-point bombs. That 11 point advantage was extended to 15 points in the final 1:22 of the quarter, giving Mamou an insurmountable 64-49 lead.
In the final quarter, Crowley tried to make a comeback, but every time they knocked down a shot, the Demons were there to respond. Mamou’s lead increased to 19 with two minutes left, but was brought back down by the Bears in the final minutes.
Tralon Arvie led all Demons with 27 points.
