MAMOU -- Behind a complete game from pitcher Jordan Ardoin, the Pine Prairie Panthers picked up a key 8-2 win over the Mamou Demons in the race for the District 5-3A crown here Wednesday afternoon.
Ardoin was pretty much in control the entire game on the hill, allowing only five hits and three walks, while striking out 11 in the win.
With the victory, the Panthers are now 13-7 on the year and 3-2 in district play.
The Demons drop to 10-12 on the season and 2-3 in league action with the loss.
The two teams were scheduled to play yesterday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Gazette will have full coverage of that game in Thursday’s edition.
After the game, Pine Prairie head coach Jake Guillory not only complemented Ardoin on his performance, but also his entire team and coaching staff.
“As good as Jordan was on the mound tonight, I have to give credit to the entire team for this win,” stated Guillory. “We finally played a complete game behind Jordan and backed up his pitching. This was a team effort all the way and I want say that I have the greatest group of assistant coaches around. They really are why we are doing the things we are this season.”
Mamou head Coach Greg Fontenot was also complementary of Ardoin and his effort.
“Ardoin has a good arm and has beaten a lot of good teams this year,” said Fontenot. “You have to tip your hat to him. I thought we competed at the plate for the most part tonight, but he just beat us tonight. We have been in a four game slide recently, and we are going to have to step it up, especially on the mound and in the field.”
Pine Prairie took control of the game early picking up two runs in the top of the first inning. Kyler Carson reached second on an overthrow to first base to lead things off.
After a strikeout, Ardoin doubled to the gap in right-center field to score Carson. On the ensuing at bat, Ardoin reached third on a strikeout in the dirt.
Joel Franks singled with two outs to score Ardoin, but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Meanwhile, Ardoin cruised on the mound, allowing only two batters to reach base in the first five innings.
The Panthers picked up their third run of the night in the top of the fourth inning. JJ Sims drew a lead off walk and reached second on a passed ball.
A fly out to the shortstop recorded the first out of the inning. Gavin Woodham reached on an error that moved Sims to third base. Nathan Bordelon drew a walk to load the bases.
A fly ball off of the bat of Carson sent Sims home and got Woodham at third base for the final out.
Pine Prairie tacked on two more runs in the fourth and added three runs in the top of the sixth, which included a two run blast over the left field wall by Ardoin.
Mamou finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kayden Serie walked to lead things off for the Demons and stole second base. After two strikeouts, Tucker Rougeau singled, plating Serie and cutting the lead to 8-1.
Mamou threatened in the bottom of the seventh once again. Devon Boone doubled to lead off the inning. Gavin Pommier singled, putting runners at first and third with no outs.
Mason Reed followed with a single to score Boone. However, with bases loaded and two outs, Ardoin got a fly out to end the game.
