Competition heats up in Ville Platte hard court tourney

VILLE PLATTE – The Ville Platte Bulldog Classic hard court tournament got underway Wednesday with several big name teams facing some fierce competition.
In the girl’s bracket, the Mamou Lady Demons got tripped up by the Avoyelles Lady Mustangs 50-45 in the opening game of the tournament on Wednesday. Mamou led 19-15 at the half, but Avoyelles tied the game at 32 apiece after three quarters of play before outscoring the Lady Demons in the final quarter.
In the second game on Wednesday, the Northwest Lady Raiders laid waste to the Marksville Lady Tigers 66-14.
The final game on Wednesday saw the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs turn a 25-21 halftime lead into a 49-44 win over the Breaux Bridge Lady Tigers. In that game, Trinity Leday lit up the scoreboard with 22 points to help Ville Platte get the win.
In Wednesday’s boys’ action, the Southside Sharks began play with a 53-47 win over the David Thibodeaux Bulldogs.
Game two featured a parish team, as the Mamou Demons fell to the Lagrange Gators 48-18. Brian Thomas picked up five points to lead the way for the Demons in that contest.
Game three pitted two St. Landry parish clubs against each other, as the North Central Hurricanes smashed the Beau Chene Gators 87-58.
The final game of the night had host team Ville Platte tangling with the Marksville Tigers. Ville Platte trailed 22-20 at the end of the first quarter but turned up the volume on both sides of the floor to own a 43-33 lead heading into the locker room.
The Bulldogs finished the game off with 45 points in the second half to score a 87-65 win. Terrian Roy had 24 points, while Tye’wuan Byers added 15 points in the winning effort.
Thursday’s girl’s action consisted of three game. In game one, the North Central Lady Hurricanes downed the Beau Chene Lady Gators 67-24.
In game two, the Mamou Lady Demons rebounded from their loss the night before as they took the 26-23 win over the Marksville Lady Tigers to move on to the consolation finals that was scheduled for Saturday.
In the final contest of the night, the Northwest Lady Raiders blew past Avoyelles 63-31.
The initial game in the boys’ bracket on Thursday had Mamou trying to stay alive in the tournament. Unfortunately for the Demons, they fell to Marksville 66-48 and was eliminated.
Game two saw Beau Chene take out David Thibodeaux 71-61 and advance on in the tournament.
The third game of the night pitting the Southern Lab Jags against North Central did not take place due to a number of Southern Lab players being out with the flu.
