Giants polish off Cubs in last at bat

You just never know what could happen in the course of a game.
Just ask the Dixie Youth 10U Giants.
After opening up a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the second, the Giants allowed the Cubs to sneak back within one run.
It took another three runs and the shut down pitching of Liam Vidrine before the Giants could claim an 11-8 win here at the Ville Platte/Evangeline Sports Complex Wednesday night.
The Giants seemed to be in control of the game in their very first at bat. The first two Giant batters were retired in the top of the first, but the next six hitters reached base, with five of those hitters crossing home plate.
The Cubs did not let the five run onslaught of the Giants keep them down. Jeremy Quibodeaux doubled to lead things off in the bottom of the first. A ground out to the first baseman put Quibodeaux at third base.
Weston Deshotel drew the one out walk to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch scored Quibodeaux and moved Deshotel to second base. Two wild pitches later, Deshotel was touching the plate, making it a 5-2 game in favor of the Giants.
The Giants picked up from where they left off in the top of the first. Carson Johnson led off with an infield single and reached third base on Gus Guillory’s double.
A single off of the bat of Will Chapman plated Johnson and pushed Guillory to third base. Chapman moved to second on the throw in from the outfield.
A ground ball out to second base allowed Guillory to score and put Chapman at third base. Leo Lahaye punched a single into the outfield, driving in Chapman.
Lahaye stole second base and in the process reached third on an errant throw from the catcher.
Lahaye would touch home following a wild pitch with Nick Soileau at the plate. By the time the at bat was over with, the Giants held a 9-2 lead.
Undeterred, the Cubs responded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Base hits from Evan Huffman and Brendan Darbonne were surrounded by a couple of walks and an error by the Giants’ infield.
Sensing the tide of the game turning, the Giants needed to pick up some more runs in order to put distance between themselves and the Cubs. In the top of the third inning Bentley Ardoin and Will Andrus each drew walks to start the at bat.
Johnson reached on a throwing error by the pitcher following a routing ground ball. That error scored Ardoin and moved Andrus to third base. A fielder’s choice and two wild pitches later, both Andrus and Johnson were home safely, giving the Giants an 11-8 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.
With the time limit running down, the Cubs had to score at least three runs to stay in the game. However, the Giants placed their ace hurler, Vidrine, on the mound to close things out.
Vidrine went to work and closed the door on the Cubs, getting three of the four batters out that he faced.
