VILLE PLATTE -- A three-run fifth inning propelled the Sacred Heart Trojans past the South Beauregard Knights in a 4-2 non-district win Thursday afternoon.
Sacred Heart moves to 8-9-1 with the win. The Trojans will travel to St. Ed’s tomorrow for a showdown with the Blue Jays. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
South Beauregard got on the board first, plating one run in the top of the first inning. Briton Coleman singled to lead things off.
Charles Keith moved Coleman over on a sacrifice bunt. Coleman reached third and then home plate on two passed balls. From that point on, Sacred Heart starting pitcher Drew Bordelon and the Trojan defense shut down the Knight offense.
Sacred Heart responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. After a pop-up to the infield recorded the first out,
Garrett Fontenot reached first on a walk. He then moved to second on an error by the South Beauregard defense that also put JT Harper at first base. Christian Duplechin drew a walk, loading the bases for the Trojans.
Gabe Fontenot flied out to right field, but it was not deep enough for Garrett Fontenot to score. Alec Gotro picked up Gabe Fontenot by singling to left field, scoring Garrett Fontenot. However, Harper was gunned down at the plate for the third out.
South Beauregard re-took the lead in the top of the second inning when Dylan Jimenez slapped a two-strike pitch over the left-center field wall. That would be all the runs that the Knights could muster in the inning, but it was enough to give them a 2-1 advantage.
Sacred Heart could not answer in the bottom half of the inning. In fact the closest the Trojans would come to putting runs across over the next three at bats was putting a lead off runner at third base in the bottom of the third.
Taking the mound in relief for Bordelon in the top of the second inning, Gabe Fontenot held the Knights at bay for the remainder of the game. South Beauregard did put a runner at second base in the top of the third inning, but Fontenot, along with the Sacred Heart defense made sure the Knights did not come any closer than that.
The Trojans sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth. Drew Bordelon led the inning off by reaching on an error. Bordelon then promptly stole second base.
After a strikeout, Bordelon reached third on another stolen base. Wesley Launey drove Bordelon home on a single to center field. A fly ball out made it two away for the Trojans.
Harper then proceeded to take an 0-1 pitch and drive it into left-center field for a stand up double, plating Launey. Duplechin recorded the final RBI of the game when he singled into center field to score Harper.
Gabe Fontenot retired the side in the top of the seventh getting a strike out and inducing two fly balls to end the game.
Launey and Gotro led all Trojan hitters going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
