Basile itching to get back on track after week one loss; host Grand Lake in Saturday game

The Basile Bearcats have been itching to get back on the field of play ever since their eye-opening 28-0 loss to the Sacred Heart Trojans in week one.
After that contest, Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand found a ton of mistakes that needed correcting and brought his team back to square one to fix those mistakes.
This past week, the Bearcats looked to get back on the field of play to show they were ready for prime time once again. However, Hurricane Delta had other things in mind; mainly shutting down almost all of the football contests in southwest Louisiana, including Basile’s game against Hamilton Christian.
“Not playing this past week hurt us in a way,” stated Bertrand. “I think we needed to play against Hamilton Christian in order to find out just how much we had learned in our practices last week. We need to find our identity and playing in a game helps do that. Our players are anxious to get back out and play Basile Bearcat football.”
Now, the Bearcats must wait an extra day to hit the gridiron, as this week’s home contest against the Grand Lake Hornets has been delayed until Saturday at 5 p.m. The reason being: the same Hurricane Delta that brought last weeks’ cancellations.
“When it became clear that Delta was going to take almost the exact same path as Laura did, most of the players at Grand Lake evacuated the area,” Bertrand said. “So, the coach from Grand Lake called and asked if we could move the game to Saturday so that he could make sure that all of his players were back in time for them to prepare for this game. We as a coaching staff did not hesitate to accommodate them. We want to get back on the field of play and see what progress we have made since the loss to Sacred Heart and we also wanted to give them a chance to have enough time to get ready.”
Grand Lake comes into the game with an overall record of 2-0. The Hornets beat St. John 53-27 in week one and took down Merryville 42-6 last week. The game against Merryville was played on Wednesday, so as to avoid the storm that was forecasted to make landfall on Friday.
“Grand Lake is a very good football team,” commented Bertrand. “They run the ball very effectively out of their split back veer offense. They can also throw the ball when the need to. They have some players that transferred in from Barbe after Hurricane Laura and you can tell that they are some quality players. We are going to have to play some solid assignment football on defense if we want to have a chance to pick up a win.”
