BASILE – Another win, another step forward for the Basile Bearcats.
Coming into this Class 1A first round game playoff game, Basile had owned the second half of the season riding a six game winning streak.
That streak was continued here Friday night, as the Bearcats rolled past the Slaughter Charter Knights by the score of 42-19.
With the win, Basile is now 8-3 on the year and will host the Montgomery Tigers this coming Friday in the Regional round of the playoffs. The Tigers defeated the Gueydan Bears 38-30 in their first round game.
It was Basile’s night from the start, as the Bearcats dominated on the scoreboard and in the statistics on their way to the win.
The Bearcats got on the board first in the opening quarter when Andre Reed rumbled his way to a 24 yard touchdown run. Jacob Guillory tacked on the extra point, giving Basile the early 7-0 lead.
The Bearcats were not done scoring in the first quarter. Later in the period, Logan David hauled in a 15 yard scoring pass from quarterback Dawson Ashford. Guillory was true on the extra point and Basile now held a 14-0 lead.
It would not take the Bearcats long in the next quarter to add to their lead, as Isaiah Ceasar extended the Basile lead with a five-yard run of his own. A true extra point off of the foot of Guillory gave the Bearcats a 21-0 lead before the Knights could blink.
However, Slaughter Charter was not going to go down without a fight. The Knights connected on a five yard touchdown pass from Shane Duncan to Demarco Goss. The two-point pass attempt failed, making the score 21-6 in favor of the Bearcats.
Basile managed to get one more touchdown in before the half expired. Ashford was able to burst his way in from three yards for the fourth Bearcat touchdown of the first half. Guillory added the extra point and as the two teams headed into the locker room, Basile owned a 28-6 lead.
Going into the second half, the Bearcats were in total control of the game and proved that by extending their lead with two touchdowns in the third quarter.
The first score came off of a Ceasar 31 yard run and the second came via a 10 yard run from Ashford. Both extra points were good by Guillory and as the third quarter came to an end, the Bearcats owned a 42-6 lead.
The Knights were able to get two more scores in the fourth quarter when the game was well in hand and with Basile giving their junior varsity players some time on the field.
On the night the Bearcats out rushed the Knights 338-136 and collected right at 400 yards of total offense.
Ceasar led the way on the ground for Basile, rushing for 137 yards on eight carries and scoring two touchdowns.
