Evangeline Parish schools played 14 players in total on the District 5-3A all-district team released last week, with five players on the first-team and nine players on the second-team.
The overall list was dominated by 3A quarterfinalist Iota, with coach Lenord Cloud being named district Coach of the Year and pitcher Gavin LeBlanc being named District MVP.
Cloud guided Iota to a 25-6 regular season record and a perfect 10-0 district record before the Bulldogs falling to Iowa in the quarterfinals.
LeBlanc was good throughout the season but got better as the season went on. He finished the regular season with a 6-1 record and a 0.41 ERA on the mound while hitting .368 overall with five home runs and a .581 batting average in district play.
For Evangeline Parish, Mamou and Pine Prairie each placed two players on the first team with Ville Platte adding one player as well.
Mamou senior Aubrey Martel is listed as a pitcher on the first team, but did even more damage at the plate for the Green Demons. While his 7-6 overall record and 3-3 district pitching record were solid, his .406 overall average and .434 district average helped lead the Green Demons at the plate.
He is joined on the first team by teammate Andre Tate. The junior outfielder was the heart-and-soul of Mamou baseball this past season, hitting .476 in district play and drove in 21 runs overall. He added 23 stolen bases.
Sophomore second baseman Alijah Fontenot figures to anchor Ville Platte baseball for the next couple seasons after his first-team selection. He hit .333 in district play and drove in 12 runs while providing solid defense up the middle all year for the Bulldogs.
The same can be said for Pine Prairie’s sophomore duo in the outfield, Branson Fontenot and Colin Ardoin. Both hit over .300 in district play. However, it was Fontenot’s ability on the bases that wreaked the most havoc. He stole 26 bases, the most in the district.
The second-team pitchers were all from Evangeline Parish. Ville Platte sophomore Bastian Veillon and junior Leslie Foreman, along with Pine Prairie sophomore Evan Ardoin represented the team.
Ville Platte’s Benjamin Romero was the second-team catcher, Mamou’s A.J. Arvie the second-team first baseman, Mamou’s Devin Ardoin the shortstop, Pine Prairie’s Dylan Bordelon and Brandon McDaniel in the outfield and Ville Platte’s Monty Fontenot and Pine Prairie freshman Cayden McCoullough being utility players.
