BUCKEYE – Most nights, Mamou knows exactly who will take the lead.
That’s usually senior forward Tyrion Broussard, the returning All-Parish performer from last season.
But, the Green Demon young guns stepped up on Tuesday night, with Tylon Quincy and Dezmond Skinner combining for 33 points to lead Mamou to a 53-44 road win over Buckeye.
The increased role of Quincy and Skinner has been brewing for a bit. Broussard has been the lead dog, but Quincy and Skinner have easily been the second and third options for Mamou offensively all season.
They stepped up on Tuesday, with Quincy getting the majority of his work done from the field while Skinner did damage from the foul line.
Quincy put up seven of Mamou’s 12 points in the opening frame as the Green Demons raced out to a 12-3 lead.
But, Mamou hit a bit of a cold spell in the second quarter as Buckeye closed the gap to narrow Mamou’s halftime lead to 19-14.
Out of the locker room, it was once again Quincy who led the charge for Mamou. He put up another seven in the third quarter as Mamou outscored Buckeye 15-9 to take an 11-point lead into the final frame, 34-23.
Then the game broke open with the teams combining for 40 points in the fourth quarter with Buckeye outscoring the Green Demons by two points, 21-19.
Mamou’s lead, and clutch foul shooting from Skinner and Quincy, allowed it to salt the game away.
Skinner saved his best play for the final frame, putting going 5-of-7 from the charity stripe in the final frame to lead Mamou.
Quincy himself went 4-for-4 for some clutch points down the stretch.
Quincy lead all scorers with 18 points, with Skinner adding 15 to lead Mamou.
Broussard chipped in eight points, while big man Shay Collins added seven points.
