VILLE PLATTE – The Sacred Heart boys and girls basketball programs welcomed in Holy Savior Menard for a rare night of Monday basketball within the Halls of Troy.
But instead of playing the role of nice guests, Holy Savior Menard came in and won both games against each program.
Girls: HSM 77
Sacred Heart 55
“The zone” is one of those elusive things in basketball that many talk about, but few actually achieve.
Holy Savior Menard, however, must’ve taken a visit in the opener of the double-header.
The Lady Eagles seemingly couldn’t miss when shooting on Monday night, and came out firing right out of the gate.
HSM took a 23-8 lead after the opening quarter, riding the coat tails of a 15-2 run.
That disastrous opening quarter seemingly sent the Lady Trojans scrambling through the rest of the contest, as Sacred Heart struggled to stop HSM’s offensive sets.
Despite putting up 17 points in the second quarter, Sacred Heart still went into the locker room down by 20 points in a 45-25 game.
HSM managed to stretch out the lead even more in the third quarter, expanding its lead to 63-36 heading into the final frame.
The Lady Trojans managed to slightly close the gap in the final frame.
Jodie Landry, Kali Shiver and Rosie Ardoin each contributed double-digits for the Lady Trojans. Landry led with 16 points, Shiver had 15 and Ardoin added 10 points.
Boys: HSM 59
Sacred Heart 48
A red-hot offensive start for the boys turned sour quickly.
The Trojans flew out of the gate on their way to a 20-12 first quarter lead. Much of that came behind Cole Tate and Karson Vidrine, who used their size to their advantage in the early going.
However, the high-flying first gave way to a plodding second frame where Sacred Heart managed only five points. Despite that slow frame, they still managed to take a 25-24 lead into the locker room.
Holy Savior Menard went back and forth with the Trojans for most of the third quarter. The Eagles took the lead with the first bucket of the second half, but went back and forth until an 11-2 run late in the third helped them gain a 41-36 lead heading into the final quarter.
The final quarter was just as much about Sacred Heart’s struggles as it was about HSM finding its stride.
A Tate three-pointer cut Menard’s lead to 45-41, but a 12-2 HSM run helped the Eagles stretch the lead to 57-43 with 2:07 remaining in the game.
