VILLE PLATTE – It couldn’t have started off better for the Sacred Heart Trojans in its baseball season opener against the Crowley Gents.
The Trojans, a senior-laden squad, had two pitchers combine for a season-opening no-hitter in a 10-0, five-inning rout.
That no-hitter, began by junior starter Jackson Bruney and finished by Lawson May, was aided by big third and fourth innings where the Trojans put up nine runs and put it out of reach for Crowley.
Much of that damage was done by left fielder Ike Perry, whose 2-for-3 performance at the plate included four RBI.
A three-up, three-down opening inning by Bruney set the tone for day. But Sacred Heart wouldn’t find its opening run until the bottom of the second when senior catcher Blake Hebert’s RBI single scored Perry for an early 1-0 lead.
A Briggs Ardoin double started the rally in the third before Perry’s two-RBI double plated Ardoin and Hayden Droddy to extend the lead to 3-0.
Wade Pitre scored when Nick Fontenot was hit by a pitch and Hebert plated Perry when walked to finish the frame with a 5-0 lead.
An error put Ardoin on in the fourth inning before a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Perry, who again drove in Ardoin and Droddy to extend the lead further.
An Everett Johnson RBI-single put Perry and Wade Pitre through to give Sacred Heart a 10-0 lead.
Johnson and Hebert each ended the season opener driving in two runs, with Johnson ending the day a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
Sacred Heart’s heart of the order – Ardoin, Droddy and Pitre – all collected two hits each to add to the tally.
Bruney built on the foundation he laid in his sophomore year, striking out six hitters without a walk in his four innings of work. Of the 40 pitches he threw, 31 went for strikes.
