SH glides past OC in sweep at home

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor VILLE PLATTE – Every team wants to get its run towards a district championship off on the right foot. That means getting a win. Usually, it also means executing well and if you’re lucky winning comfortably. Both Sacred Heart teams checked all the boxes on Tuesday night. The Lady Trojans led wire-to-wire and overwhelmed the Opelousas Catholic Lady Vikings 65-26 to start District 6-1A the right way. As for the boys, the Trojans battled back from eight points down late in the contest and defeated Opelousas Catholic 66-64 to open District 6-1A play with a win. The following is a rundown of both games: Sacred Heart (G) vs. OC A 16-point outing by Bre’ Ardoin and 11 by Kali Shiver highlighted the Lady Trojans impressive win, with Sacred Heart holding a 25-17 halftime lead before turning it on in a big way in the second half. That eight-point lead stretched to a 24-point lead by the end of the third quarter as Sacred Heart went on a 23-7 run that put the game out of reach. An 11-2 run jump started the Lady Trojans out of the locker room, with and-1 plays by Shiver and Jolie Vidrine leading the way to Sacred Heart moving into a 36-18 advantage. Sacred Heart ended the game with every player but two entering the score book with points. But, Opelousas Catholic was in the fight throughout the first half, managing to keep Sacred Heart within arm’s length when the game threatened to get out of hand. That was until the pivotal third quarter, where offensive execution and defensive tenacity swung the game in Sacred Heart’s favor. The Lady Trojans forced multiple turnovers on the way to easy fast break buckets and the opportunity to play the last few minutes of the fourth quarter on a running clock. Alyssa Brignac was the other Lady Trojan in double-figures. She finished with 10 points, with Jodie Landry adding six and Vidrine five. The Lady Trojans travel to False River this Friday to play their second District 6-1A contest. Sacred Heart (B) vs. OC The Trojans ebbed and flowed throughout the game, battling back on more than one occasion only to see the Vikings go on another run and put some distance between them and the young Trojans. It went that way throughout the game. Until finally it didn’t with the Trojans battling back from a 64-56 margin with the winning blow being a Karson Vidrine three-point play with 4.5 seconds remaining. Vidrine was dominant for Sacred Heart in the second half, scoring 24 points on the way to a game-high 29. Vidrine led a three-headed monster for the Trojans that was complimented by Cole Tate and Hayden Deshotel, who scored 16 and 19 points respectively. In all Vidrine, Deshotel and Tate combined for 64 of Sacred Heart’s 66 points. But, it was Vidrine who did the heavy lifting in the second half. With Sacred Heart down nine points at halftime, Vidrine scored 12 of the Trojans’ first 14 points of the second half to tie the game up at 41 before Opelousas Catholic closed the period on a 8-0 run to take an eight-point lead into the final quarter. But, when it got tough the Trojans got resilient and put up a massive 23-point outing in the final quarter. Vidrine had another 12 in the final quarter, with a Deshotel three-pointer and a Colby Cloud bucket adding to the tally. The Trojans pulled within one with a minute to play before Vidrine’s final three-point play sealed the win that started Sacred Heart’s district schedule off with a bang.
