PRAIRIE RONDE — The math was simple for the Mamou Green Demons entering Friday night’s contest against the Northwest Raiders.
Mamou entered Week 10 as the projected No. 26 team in the Division III non-select playoff bracket, with 28 teams slated to be playing for a shot at a state championship. The Green Demons’ mission on Friday night was simple: win and qualify for postseason play for the first time in over a decade.
Instead, Mamou awaits its fate today at noon after falling 36-6 to the Raiders.
Northwest played a complete game Friday night, took a 22-0 lead into the locker room and never looked back. Its wing-T running game was devastating, rolling up 347 yards on the ground on 42 carries.
On the other side of the ball, Northwest’s defense more than did its part. It limited Mamou’s potentially prolific offense to only 138 total yards, with the Green Demons mustering only 32 yards on the ground through 26 attempts.
The Green Demons struggled with self-inflicted wounds as well.
Mamou lost three turnovers, two fumbles and an interception. They were also penalized seven times for 85 yards Friday night.
Mamou struggled despite another strong game from Devin Ardoin. He went 7-of-11 passing for 92 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Mamou’s lone touchdown of the game came off of Ardoin’s arm, when he connected on a six-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 left in the third period to cut Northwest’s lead to two touchdowns, 22-8, heading into the final quarter.
Another Northwest touchdown and pick-six put more distance between the teams.
