Late surge propels Mamou over Eunice

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor MAMOU — In a tight basketball game, especially one where you aren’t at your best early on, sometimes all you have to do is weather the storm. The Mamou Green Demons did exactly that last Friday when it hosted the Eunice Bobcats in non-district play, overcoming an early Eunice surge to defeat them by a 74-67 margin in front of a red-hot home crowd. The Green Demons overcame a lead that Eunice stretched to as many as ten points in the third quarter before a Dezmond Skinner three-pointer gave the Green Demons a lead late in the third quarter that they wouldn’t give up. Eunice, however, came out the gate flying and outscored Mamou 17-10 in the opening quarter, using its advantage in speed and athleticism to grab an early edge. However, with a simmering home crowd, the Green Demons chipped away at Eunice’s lead to cut it to four points by halftime, 30-26. Not traditional rivals, the crowd was deeply invested by the third quarter, where the game turned to which side would be calmer under pressure. As it turned out, it would be Mamou, who got a large helping hand from the red-hot shooting of Skinner, who knocked down six three-pointers in the second half alone on his way to a team-high 31 points. Skinner and senior Tyrian Broussard combined for 58 of Mamou’s 74 points on the night. Skinner’s shooting from beyond the arc and Broussard’s clutch approach at the charity stripe were a big boost for Mamou, who outscored Eunice 50-37 in the second half. Broussard was a perfect seven-for-seven from the foul line in the fourth period alone to lead Mamou.
