VILLE PLATTE — There is no questioning that the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans softball team will be better off as the season goes along.
The Lady Trojans have faced a tough slate to open the season, facing three Class 3A opponents and three Class 5A opponens, including a perennial contender, to start the year.
The results have been a mixed bag, with Sacred Heart getting some good wins but ultimately battle-testing itself for district play later in the season.
Sacred Heart 17,
Crowley 3
The Lady Trojans opened their year with a road game against Crowley back on Feb. 17, and did so in style, jumping out to a 17-0 lead after their four plate appearances and not looking back.
The Lady Trojans offense blasted four home runs, with Carlee Soileau hitting one out in the second inning, Aubree Guillory and Catherine Larson going deep in the third inning and Jolie Vidrine blasting one in the fifth.
It provided more than enough support for senior pitcher Halle Lafleur, who struck out nine hitters in four innings of work.
Soileau led the Lady Trojans with four RBI, with Guillory and Larson each adding three.
Walker 15,
Sacred Heart 3
Playing a 5A opponent, Walker jumped out to a 6-0 lead and put the nail in the coffin with a six-run fourth inning.
It wasn’t all negative for Sacred Heart. Guillory continued her hot start, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, a double and a triple to lead her team.
Larson chipped in the other RBI in the losing effort.
Buckeye 11,
Sacred Heart 1
Playing its third-consecutive road game, Sacred Heart couldn’t quite get out of the blocks against Buckeye.
The Lady Trojans managed only one hit, a Vidrine single, and had three errors while striking out 13 times at the dish.
Their lone run came after a Vidrine double in the inning where she scored off of the lone Buckeye error.
Erath 8, Sacred Heart 4
Sacred Heart lost its third-straight contest in its home opener.
It came in an unfortunate way, with Sacred Heart outhitting Erath by a 8-5 margin but making five fielding errors.
The Lady Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning, with Lafleur plating the opening run for the Trojans on an Erath error.
A Vidrine double would score Guillory to extend the lead, with Larson following her up with an RBI-single to add to the lead.
Erath, though, would put up twin three-run innings in the third and fourth innings to take the lead.
Vidrine finished the game 1-for-3 with the RBI. Jacelyn Pitre and Larson each added RBI for the Lady Trojans.
Sacred Heart 11,
New Iberia 4
An early 7-2 lead and a four-run sixth helped the Lady Trojan bats get back on track.
Vidrine, Guillory, Ava Johnson and Jodie Landry gave the Sacred Heart middle of the order thump, combining for nine RBI and five extra-base hits. Vidrine was responsible for three of them, all doubles.
Its big inning came in a five-run second, which gave Vidrine enough backing ot come up on the winning end as the starting pitcher.
Vidrine threw a complete game, allowing only two earned runs while striking out eight Lady Jackets.
Sam Houston 13,
Sacred Heart 6
Sacred Heart went toe-to-toe with one of 5A’s better programs before the Lady Broncos put up an eight-run fifth inning to separate themselves.
Before that, Sacred Heart held a 6-5 lead behind a three-run Vidrine homer. Johnson and Landry each added doubles.
