VP walking with giants against Church Point

CHURCH POINT – By almost any measurable statistic, there is no reason to believe that the Ville Platte Bulldogs have any way of hanging around with Class 3A’s No. 3 team, the Church Point Bears, tonight in District 4-3A play.
The Bears (7-0, 4-0) have featured one of the state’s top-scoring offenses all season long.
The Bulldogs (2-5, 2-2) have struggled, sometimes mightily, to get its offense going consistently this season.
Church Point has made the Class 3A semifinals each of the past two seasons, while Ville Platte has been watching the postseason from home.
So, in a lot of ways, Ville Platte is walking into a mismatch tonight. And to top it off, head coach Roy Serie may even know about it.
Serie and his Bulldogs aren’t delusional, but are hopeful of being able to give Church Point a few issues in tonight’s district matchup.
Ville Platte is coming off of its second win of the year in beating Port Barre 29-22 last week.
The Bulldogs built a significant early lead and held off the Red Devils at the end to even its district record.
Not coincidentally, Ville Platte’s second win was similar to its first in one particular way.
“I’d say that Port Barre and Pine Prairie were probably the two best defensive games we’ve played this season,” Serie said.
Ville Platte was also able to find some success on the ground in last week’s game, headlined by Jakahalen Slaughter’s 118 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries.
“We’re not there yet, but we’re making strides and improvements,” Serie said.
Peaking at the right time isn’t a bad thing, especially when you’re traveling to Church Point to play an offensive giant like the Bears.
Church Point has managed to score at will against everyone it has played this year, and Serie is aware of it.
“Coach Arceneaux has done such a good job there,” Serie there. “It’s never a matter of rebuilding there. They’re just plugging them in. He’s got a good thing going. They’re locked in and they’re the real deal.
“It’s a challenge. A lot of eyes are on them. It’s a chance for us to see how we stack up against one of the better teams in the state.”
It’s high praise for a team that earned it. Serie knows that it would take a biblical effort for his team to upset Church Point.
Serie even took inspiration from the Good Book for this Friday.
“David didn’t know what he was walking into against Goliath,” Serie said. “He just grabbed his stone and slingshot and headed over there.
“I’m not sure what kind of stone we have in our slingshot, but we’re going to go over there and shoot our shot.”
