Bearcats topple Oberlin, control district title race

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor In yet another rivalry, the Basile Bearcats showed that they actually practice what heac coach Kevin Bertrand preaches. Take it step-by-step. One game at a time. Do what you need to do to be 1-0 this week. Basile takes pride in never overlooking an opponent, and it showed in a 35-13 thumping of the Oberlin Tigers at home Friday night. It was nothing out of the ordinary for Basile (6-1, 4-0), who was locked up in a tight first half battle before pulling away in the third quarter like they have for much of this season. They did it their way, controlling the ball for 28 minutes of the contest and riding the legs of senior running backs Horace Edwards and Ashton Deaville once again. Edwards and Deaville has possibly their most balanced game of the year Friday, running for 138 and 136 yards respectively as Basile rolled up another 300-yard rushing game once again. It was Edwards who started the tally for Basile, getting the Bearcats on the board with :20 left in the opening quarter through a two-yard touchdown run. It was the first of two touchdowns on the night for Edwards, who brought his season total of touchdowns into the double-digits Friday night. Oberlin responded with 7:35 left before halftime, when quarterback Colby McMahon scored on an 11-yard keeper ot tie the game at 7. Basile quarterback Luc Johnson responded with a keeper of his own with 1:17 left until halftime. Johnson’s eighth rushing touchdown of the year brought the Bearcats into the locker room with a 14-7 lead. Coming out of the locker room Deaville scored on a four-yard run, his 10th touchdown of the season, to extend Basile’s lead to 21-7. Then the Bearcats got wacky by their run-heavy standards, with Johnson connecting with Gavin Ardoin on a 38-yard touchdown reception to extend Basile’s lead to 28-7 with :33 left in the third quarter. Edwards’ one-yard plunge with 7:37 left in the contest put the game well out of reach and allowed the Bearcats to extend its lead to 35-7. Basile’s defense put up another stifling performance, limiting Oberlin to 210 yards of total offense, with the Tigers struggling on third down and only converting 3-of-10 conversions. Basile, on the other hand, rarely found itself in third down predicaments. Basile found itself in third down situations only five times Friday night, converting three of them. The Bearcats also went 2-of-3 on fourth down conversions. The Bearcats travel to Port Barre next Friday for a non-district game against the winless Red Devils.
