Bearcats dominate Warriors on short week

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor LAKE CHARLES – Short week? Not a problem for the Basile Bearcats. Normally slow starters, the Bearcats (5-1, 2-0) raced out in the first half and scored 36 points before halftime and eight rushing touchdowns on the night to cruise to a 57-16 win over the Hamilton Christian Warriors. Much of that load, as it has been all year, was carried by senior running backs Ashton Deaville and Horace Edwards. The pair combined for 262 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Deaville supplied much of the yardage, going for 187 yards. Edwards scored three touchdowns and ran for 75 yards. Overall, 343 of Basile’s 380 total yards came on the ground. Edwards’ supplied the game’s opening touchdown with a two-yard run with 6:47 left in the opening quarter to give Basile a 7-0 lead. Hamilton responded quickly when 8th grader Javon Vital returned the ensuing Ross Cortez kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion gave Hamilton an 8-7 lead. It would last two minutes, as Luc Johnson scored on a one-yard run to help the Bearcats regain a 14-8 lead. Johnson’s touchdown started a run of 50-unanswered points that wasn’t broken by the Warriors until the final three minutes of the contest. The Bearcats never punted throughout the game and averaged eight yards per carry while collecting 25 first downs. Five different Bearcats – Deaville, Edwards, Johnson, Tucker Leblanc and Kye Smith – got into the end zone on the ground. Not to be outdone, Basile’s defense did its part. It limited Hamilton to 191 yards of total offense and only seven first downs.
