Did you hear that?
That sound is the build up of anticipation of another football season. It may sound faint now, but, in a week or so, it will build up to that of a tempest.
Personally, I am looking forward to another season of football. I am ready to hear about the “chili cheese fries piled so high a circus dog could jump over them” at Oakdale. I am ready for more hot dogs in the LSU press box. Ok, I may have a problem, but, hey, food and football always go together right?
Speaking of food... what is the over/under on gumbos that will be cooked this football season? I can smell all the roux already.
What I am not ready for though are the mosquitoes the size of pterodactyls on hot, muggy nights and the nights that follow that are cold and rainy on the sidelines.
One of the first indications that football season is nigh is our fantasy football draft, which was held this past Friday.
Fantasy football and I haven’t always gotten along over the years. It’s been a love-hate relationship. Some of that is my own fault for making some dumb picks. Picking Mike Alstot as my starting running back when I started playing in 2006 was an early indication of how things would be.
Some of the other lowlights are me drafting Mike Sims-Walker in the third or fourth round and drafting Jordy Nelson when the receiver from Green Bay whom I wanted was already drafted.
The Nelson pick kind of worked out for me because he had a decent rookie season that year.
Lately, I managed to finish in second place the last two seasons. That is a surprise to everyone, me included.
One reason, I guess, for my recent success is I stopped over managing and over thinking about my team. Nah, that can’t be it.
Anyway, early indications show this year’s fantasy team, Empirical Data, is poised for another playoff run. I got Breece Hall in the first round, drafted Marvin Harrison Jr. and Puka Nacua, and got the steal of the draft in Jaxon Smith-Njigha.
I guess I have an affinity for wide receivers with hyphenated names.
Football here locally kicks off tomorrow night with the jamborees. I will not be taking in any of the action because I will be in Las Vegas for the LSU game against USC on
Sunday.
I have seen LSU fans take over places like Seattle, Green Bay, Omaha, and Morgantown, W. Va., so I’m looking forward to seeing the mass of purple and gold descend on Vegas.
I may or may not write a column after I get back because you know what they say... “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”
