GERALDINE BERTRAND ORTEGO “GERRY”

EUNICE – Our hearts are filled with sorrow as our family announces the passing of our loving mother, wife, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Geraldine Bertrand Ortego, on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at Acadian Medical Center in Eunice at the age of 82. A Celebration of Life was celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, December 22, 2017 at Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Eunice. Entombment followed at St. Paul Cemetery with Pastor Dave Smith officiating.
Gerry was born on September 1, 1935 to Magnus Bertrand and Elise Hebert Bertrand in Washington. She was the third of five daughters. After marrying in 1953 she moved to Ville Platte and resided there for 20 years and eventually moved to Eunice and lived there for over 45 years.
In the early years of her life Gerry became a licensed florist and owned her own shop in Ville Platte for many years. She loved flowers and enjoyed making floral arrangements. Later in life she began sitting with the sick and caring for them. She was passionate about giving good quality of care for those that were ill and became respected for doing so.
She will be truly missed dearly by all who knew and loved her, especially her loving husband of 64 years, Allen Paul Ortego, of Eunice; four sons, Paul Blane Ortego, of Baton Rouge, Daniel Dean Ortego, (Jane) of Eunice, Michael Lloyd Ortego, (Sandra) of Destin, Florida and Craig Anthony Ortego, (Sharie) of Lafayette; twelve grandchildren, Town Ortego, Ben Ortego, Marshal Ortego, Margaret Ortego, of Baton Rouge, Crystal Ortego, of Ville Platte, Daniel Ortego (Brittany), Brent Ortego, of Eunice, Katie Ortego, of Lafayette, Kristal Ortego, of Orlando, Florida, Dr. Kayla Shipley (Tanner), Blake Ortego, and Karaline Ortego, of Lafayette; three great granddaughters, Cali Ortego, Aubri Ortego, of Eunice and Emma Shipley, of Lafayette; as well as extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Magnus Bertrand, and Elise Hebert Bertrand, as well as four sisters, Alice Hutchinson, Wilda Thomas, Barbara Fisher and Nova Anding.
Her six grandsons were her pallbearer’s and her grand-son-in-law served as her honorary pallbearer.
At the request of the family, visitation was held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Eunice on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and again on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. until time of services.
