The community of Ville Platte sadly lost one of its pillars on Friday, October 26, when Mr. Curley Dossman, Sr., favorably known as Coach passed away unexpectedly at the age of 88. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2018, at St. John Baptist Church in Ville Platte, LA. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m.
Interment will be in St. John Memorial Gardens in Ville Platte, LA on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 9:00 AM.
He was born on July 31, 1930, in Evangeline Parish to the late Ben Dossman, Sr. and the late Clara Chamber Dossman in St. Landry, Louisiana.
Coach was a 1947 graduate of James Stephens High School; He received a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from Leland College in 1951, Bachelor of Science from Southern University in 1957 and a Masters in Administration and Supervision in Education from Southern University in 1969.
Professionally, Coach worked as an educator teaching Social Sciences and coaching football and basketball at James Stephen High School in Ville Platte, Louisiana. He also was principal at W.W. Stewart Elementary School in Basile, Louisiana where he retired after working a total of 30 years for the Louisiana Department of Education System.
As a community advocate, Coach was always a man of action and involvement. He remained an active member of the community until his death. He was heavily committed to numerous community programs and organizations including Ville Platte City Council for over 20 years, Southern University Board of Supervisors for over 10 years and Evangeline Parish Solid Waste Commission for over 20 years.
Mr. Dossman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Derutha Layton Dossman whom he cherished and loved dearly; a son, Curley M. Dossman Jr. (Jennifer) of Lithonia, Georgia; a daughter, Judy D. Jenkins (John) of Carrollton, Texas; a grandson he and his wife raised as their own, Tommy C. Jones of Ville Platte, La; a sister, Lela Dossman Ragland of Richmond, California; three grandsons, Johnathan Dossman, John Jenkins Jr. and Anthony Jones; four great-grandsons, Tyran Jones, Tyler Jones, Brandon Jones and Fitzgerald Dossman. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews in the southern and western region of the United States including but not limited to Louisiana, California and Alaska.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ben Dossman Sr. and Clara Chambers Dossman; a daughter, Darlene Dossman Jones, two sisters and seven brothers.
