“Summer has come and
passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September
ends.”
This Green Day song is an apt description of how my September started. My mom was in the hospital for a night. My car died on the side of the Whiteville Road. Charlie Kirk was assassinated. I got run over on the sideline while covering a football game at Ville Platte High.
But, after all that, my theme song for the month changed from Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” to “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Two main things shifted the needle on the record. The first was news that my car’s warranty covered the replacement of my engine. The other was baseball related.
With about a week remaining in the regular season, the Chicago Cubs clinched a playoff spot. They then clinched home-field advantage for the National League Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres.
Before the playoffs started, I made a prediction on the radio that the Cubs would win the World Series this year. Here’s why. The only other time I got run over on the sideline while covering a high school football game was in 2016 at Ville Platte High. The last time the Cubs won the World Series was 2016. I’m calling it now. You can take that to the bank.
My prediction is one step closer to coming true as the Cubs won the series against the Padres on Thursday night.
Now, I am going to make a rather Orwellian prediction. The Cubs will play the Detroit Tigers in the Fall Classic. It will be the World Series we should have gotten in 1984.
Back in 1984, the Cubs lost to the Padres in the National League Championship Series. The Padres then went on and lost to the Tigers in the World Series.
If that does indeed come to pass, my 2-year-old self would be happy. Then we can all sing...
“Do you remember
The 21st night of September?
Love was changin’ the minds of pretenders
While chasin’ the clouds away
Our hearts were ringin’
In the key that our souls were singin’
As we danced in the night, remember
How the stars stole the night away, oh, yeah.”
