After almost 56 years, Mamou Acadian Press to cease publication

After almost 56 years of publication, it is with great sadness that we announce that the Mamou Acadian Press will cease publication following the Tuesday, December 26, edition. Publisher Garland Forman made the announcement last week.
“The recent downturn in the local economy has had negative impact on the revenues of the newspaper which led to the difficult decision” Forman explained.
The Acadian Press was delivered to 3,000 homes in the Mamou area. With the closure, readers can now turn to the Ville Platte Gazette, which is published on Thursday and Sunday of each week for local Evangeline Parish news. Forman said the staff at the Ville Platte Gazette will report the news happening in Mamou in the Gazette each week.
“The Gazette has always reported news in Mamou and will continue to do so” Forman continued. Coverage of Mamou school news, civic events and governmental meetings will be published in the Gazette. Readers in the Mamou area can submit pictures and news by emailing them to editor@evangelinetoday.com or dropped off at the Gazette office located at 145 Court Street in Ville Platte.
The Acadian Press published its first edition on March 2, 1967. The editor was Elvin Reed with Mike Deshotel serving as advertising manager and Dianne McGee as the office manager. Louisiana State Newspapers purchased The Acadian Press in June 1987 and has owned the newspaper for over 36 years.
“We will be running advertisements in the upcoming issues informing the readers of The Acadian Press on how they can subscribe to The Ville Platte Gazette,” Forman continued. “We thank the businesses and community of Mamou for welcoming us into their homes for the last 56 years. We want to continue that same commitment with the same staff but through the Ville Plate Gazette.”
