National Weather Service issues update

Much drier air will filter into the region today, with northerly winds 10 to 15 mph and gusts as high as 25 mph at times. These conditions will combine to produce critical fire weather conditions today, with the potential for rapid wildfire development and spread. Burn bans remain in effect across the area and individuals are urged to avoid activities that produce open flames or sparks.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Idalia has made landfall this morning in the Big Bend region of Florida. The storm reached Category 4 strength prior to making landfall, resulting in catastrophic storm surge and devastating winds across portions of Florida. The storm will continue moving northeast today, bringing heavy rainfall and tropical storm to hurricane force winds to parts of Georgia and South Carolina through tomorrow.
