Ardoin grand slam powers Mamou past Westgate

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor MAMOU – Now, that’s how you end a skid. After taking a 19-0 loss last Saturday to Catholic-New Iberia, the Mamou Green Demons enacted revenge in a big way Monday night on their home turf. A six-run first inning, a Devin Ardoin grand slam homer in the fourth inning and six Westgate fielding errors set the table for a Brady Fontenot complete game shutout as Mamou cruised past the Westgate Tigers by a 10-0 margin. Mamou’s early offensive outburst started when a pair of walks, one by Donovyn Henderson and the other by Julain Perron, set the stage for a Christian Herbert single for the game’s opening run with Perron then scoring on an error. With A.J. Arvie up, Herbert scored on a wild pitch to add to Mamou’s early lead. Arvie scored on a passed ball before Henderson plated two runs with a double in his second at-bat of the inning. That six-run opening frame likely would’ve been enough for Mamou had Fontenot not been on top of his game on the bump. Thankfully for Mamou, he was. Fontenot was sharp throughout the contest. In his five innings of work, he surrendered only three hits and struck out five Westgate hitters. He ran into a bit of trouble in the second inning, allowing a pair of singles before a punch out got him out of a potential jam before it got too hairy. He got stronger as the contest went on. A two-out single in the third inning was the final hit he surrendered in the game. He’d go on to finish the game perfectly. In his final 2.1 innings pitched, Fontenot didn’t surrender a single hit or walk while punching out three Tigers and not letting the ball out of the infield in either the fourth or fifth innings. His solid pitching must have taken pressure off of Ardoin, whose bases loaded homer to center field ignited his team and ended the big win on a positive note. Henderson and Herbert each collected multiple hits for the Demons. Both went 2-for-3, with Henderson driving in two runs. Ardoin’s homer was his lone hit in the contest. The Demons were back in action today against Sacred Heart. Results of that game will be available in Sunday’s edition of The Gazette.
