IOTA – Sacred Heart baseball figured it would learn about itself after this week’s John R. Young Tournament put on by Eunice High.
With scheduled matchups against perennial contenders like Kinder and Teurlings Catholic, this weekend serves as a measuring stick for exactly how far the Trojans can go this season.
If nothing else, Sacred Heart’s matching up against elite competition will prepare it for down the road.
The Trojans ran into rocky waters in Thursday’s tournament opener after being shut out 7-0 by Kinder, who was boosted by a Brayden Guillory complete game.
Guillory dominated on the hill, giving up only two hits and striking out 12 Trojans.
For Sacred Heart, the early omens of a tough day showed themselves in the first inning when Kinder loaded the bases with no outs.
A leadoff double and two singles put the Yellow Jackets in prime position to score before Sacred Heart starter Jackson Bruney worked some magic, getting out of a rough jam with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to keep the game scoreless.
Instead of igniting the offense, the Trojans ran into issues with Guillory. Sacred Heart’s two hits, a Hayden Droddy single and a Wade Pitre double were the only threats they’d muster through the entire day.
When Kinder struck, it struck big. All of their runs came in the third and fifth innings, headlined by Lance LeBoeuf and Jhyran King home runs.
LeBoeuf finished the game 3-for-4 with his homer and six total bases.
Bruney took the loss despite getting out of the first inning jam. He surrendered seven hits and three earned runs, but went walk-free and striking out five Jackets.
Griffin Cooley added a big day for Kinder, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Hayden Droddy did his best to get things started for the Trojans. He added two stolen bases to go with his hit.
