LIVINGSTON — In every sport, there are going to be days where a team is just outgunned, outplayed and outmatched.
However, you never want that time to be in the playoffs. That’s when it matters most.
For the 18th-seeded Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs, it ran into one such team on Thursday night in the opening round of the Division III non-select playoff bracket. The Lady Dogs fell by a 64-47 margin to 15-seed Doyle, ending its season with an 14-14 overall mark.
The Lady Tigers ultimately put distance between them and the Lady Bulldogs in a 21-13 third quarter that stretched its lead from six points at the break to 14 by the end of the third.
But Ville Platte did fall behind from the jump, down 13-7 by the end of the opening frame.
Four points by Vandryua Wilson and another three by Saniah Williams supplied the Lady Dogs’ offense early on.
But, try as they may throughout the game, the Ville Platte couldn’t ever fully get up and running against Doyle.
The closest the Lady Dogs came to out-scoring Doyle was in the second quarter where both squads put up 10 points and the Lady Tigers maintained a six-point lead, 23-17, heading into the intermission.
Any momentum Ville Platte had from hanging tough with the higher seed through the first half was effectively killed in the third period.
Despite a balanced attack that saw five players contribute to Ville Platte’s 13-point third quarter, they couldn’t stop Doyle as they stretched the lead.
Even when the Lady Dogs’ offense finally fired up, they couldn’t stop Doyle as the Lady Tigers rode a 41-point second half to a comfortable win.
Wilson ended the game as Ville Platte’s lone double-digit scorer with a team-high 19 points.
With the win Doyle advanced to the Regional round of the playoffs to play No. 2-seeded Amite, who earned a first-round bye.
