Ville Platte sweeps Mamou in District 4-3A play

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor MAMOU – With the basketball regular season winding down and district championships and power points at play, every game remaining in the regular season can almost be perceived as a playoff game. It is under those circumstances that the Ville Platte Bulldogs traveled into Mamou last Friday in hopes of keeping each of their district title hopes alive. Ville Platte went into Mamou’s home gym and took both games, with the girls maintaining a tie at the top of the District 4-3A standings and the boys sitting all alone in first place of the league standings following 47-28 and 68-59 wins respectively. GIRLS Ville Platte 47, Mamou 28 Lady Bulldogs senior guard Vandryua Wilson came out red-hot to start the game, putting up eight points in the first quarter as Ville Platte raced out to a 13-6 lead. The lead came only after Mamou jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind a pair of three-pointers before the Lady Bulldogs closed the period on an 11-0 run. A fast-paced start gave way to a struggle of a second, where neither team could really get off the ground offensively. Mamou outscored Ville Platte 5-3 in the second quarter but the Lady Bulldogs maintained a 16-11 halftime lead. A 15-5 third period gave Ville Platte the space it needed to put the game away for good. A balanced offensive attack and continued good defense allowed the Lady Bulldogs a 15-5 advantage in the period. The Lady Demons managed to close the gap in the final period, pulling with eight points after some hot shooting allowed them to drain three 3-point baskets. But a 13-2 run to close the game gave Ville Platte one more push to take the win. BOYS Ville Platte 68, Mamou 59 An evenly matched game saw Ville Platte pull away with a strong third quarter where it outscored Mamou 26-12. Ville Platte outscored Mamou 15-12 in the opening quarter despite Mamou’s Tyrian Broussard putting up seven to lead his team. Mamou outscored Ville Platte 14-9 in the second period to take a 26-22 lead into the break. A Tylon Quincy three-pointer sprung Mamou into a 17-15 lead early in the second, one it would maintain and punctuate thanks to a Shay Collins dunk. Despite the second-quarter momentum, Ville Platte took the game back in the third period behind junior guard Sage Papillion. Papillion scored 11 points in the third alone as Ville Platte took a 50-38 lead into the final quarter. A 9-1 Mamou run cut Ville Platte’s lead to 58-52 with under four minutes to play. But a final push where Ville Platte outlasted Mamou 10-7 gave them enough of a margin to pull out the win.
