Third period dooms SH boys against WCA

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor VILLE PLATTE – Sometimes, all it takes in sports is one quarter or period to make it a bad night. Coming off of last week’s dramatic win over Opelousas Catholic to open District 6-1A play, the Sacred Heart Trojans were doomed by one bad quarter on its way to a 58-43 loss to the Westminster Christian Crusaders on Wednesday night to even the Trojans’ district record at 1-1. Within two points at halftime, the Trojans let the third period get away from them defensively as Westminster outscored Sacred Heart 20-8 in the quarter to take a decisive 14-point lead into the final frame. It was no one player dominating for WCA, as it placed four players in double-figures in the game. They were led by Randall Cam’s game-high 16 points. Westminster managed to eek out a 10-7 lead in the opening quarter while Sacred Heart attempted to find itself offensively. Cole Tate and Colby Cloud showed the only signs of offensive life in the frame, with Cloud scoring four and Tate hitting a three-pointer. The Trojans were much better in the second period, edging a 14-13 advantage to close the gap to 23-21 as both teams headed into the locker room. Hayden Deshotel put up seven of his team-high 11 points in the second quarter to lead the Trojans, while Karson Vidrine came alive and added five of his own points. The second quarter would be the only one in which Sacred Heart owned an advantage, as WCA came out of the locker room a different team. The 20-8 advantage it held was partly due to a red-hot run by Thomas Damien, who buried a pair of three-pointers on his way to eight in the quarter. Sacred Heart’s Gabe Fontenot added a three-pointer of his own, but the Trojans were doomed by leaving free points on the floor in the frame. The team went only 1-of-5 from the charity stripe in the period and 6-of-13 in the contest. When Sacred Heart found some rhythm in the final quarter, it was too little and too late. Vidrine was the team’s other double-digit scorer, finishing with 10 points. Fontenot added eight.
