Ville Platte drops Oakdale doubleheader

By: RHETT MANUEL Sports Editor OAKDALE – It was a tough night at the office for the Ville Platte boys and girls basketball program. An early surge wasn't enough to put away Oakdale in the boys contest, while offensive struggles did the girls in early. Boys- Oakdale 74 Ville Platte 72 An big early lead and four double-digit scorers couldn’t help the boys team close the deal against the Warriors. Ville Platte opened up a 28-15 lead in the opening frame behind a balanced offense that saw five players score at least four points, with Latelldrick Prejean coming out strong with seven points in the opening frame to lead the Bulldogs. However, Oakdale slowly but surely chipped away at the lead in the second and third quarters in cutting the margin to nine points, 53-44. The Warriors bided their time until the final quarter, when they exploded for 30 points to outscore the Bulldogs by 11 to take the two-point win. It was Oakdale’s Cedrick Allison who made it happen in the final frame for his team, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to pace the Warrior charge. He and D.J. Johnson, who scored a game-high 21 points, did enough in the final frame to outpace Ville Platte’s junior guard Sage Papillion, who led the team with 19 points and did his part in the final frame to hold off Oakdale by scoring eight points. Girls- Oakdale 58 Ville Platte 32 In the girls opener, Ville Platte’s offensive struggles continued. Usually, the Lady Bulldogs have gone as senior guard Vandryua Wilson has this season. Wilson struggled in this one, scoring only five points. Their continued struggles played out from the opening tip with Oakdale outscoring Ville Platte 21-9 in the opening quarter to take control of the contest. They stretched out the lead to 32-17 by halftime before putting Ville Platte away in a big way in the final frame by outscoring them 18-6. Janiah Leday led Ville Platte with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
