John 8:44 NIV says, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks a native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Lying is something that comes easily to most people, but those of us who profess to be Christians should avoid falling into this trap, not just because it causes trouble for us and for the people around us, but lying hurts our culture, those around us, and the church. But another reason that we are not to lie is because it’s part of that old man, that old part of our old selves that has been nailed to the cross, has been tried and convicted, and put to death. Our lies are sins that Jesus died to pay the price for. Lying is part of our old life, and we shouldn’t have use for it anymore.
Therefore, let me encourage you to tell the truth and all of your interactions with one another, and with the world that we are trying to reach for Christ. Let’s reflect the character of the One who is the embodiment of truth, the One described in 1 Samuel 15:29 NIV, “He who is the glory of Israel does not lie.” Let’s be truth tellers. Let’s take lying seriously, so seriously that we cannot do it. We must not live in it.
Lying is a sin, and the Word of God specifically says that no sin will enter Heaven; therefore, liars will not make it in. On the contrary, they have a special place provided for them in the lake of fire. I choose not to become a resident of that fiery place. How about you? If you’re guilty of lying, ask God to forgive you, and if you need help to overcome a lying tongue, ask the Lord for help and strength from the Holy Spirit to overcome this problem.
