Heritage Manor News: Sleeping habits

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by Patricia Duplechin, resident activity director at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Ville Platte. This column runs every Sunday in The Gazette.)
Sleeping well is important to older adults, especially active ones, as well as other adults. Sleeping seven to nine hours is considered healthy sleep hours. Better sleeping patterns help people to stay on top of things with a sharper vision. New research shows good sleeping habits help to prevent dementia. Age, lifestyle, health conditions, and the body’s hormones all influence the sleep-wake cycle.
Just because a person is older does not necessarily mean there will be sleep problems. Insomnia is the most common sleep problem in adults age 60 and older. Those with insomnia have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Insomnia has been associated with anxiety, depression, fatigue, and cognition. Some things that may contribute to a lack of sleep are medications, health conditions, and change of lifestyle.
