Basile hosts Gueydan; one win away from district title contest

When it comes to taking home a district title, the Basile Bearcats are on the right track.
After their week five loss to Grand Lake, Basile (5-3, 4-1) has made it a mission to get back on the right track. Since that time, the Bearcats have reeled off three wins in a row, including their 49-33 win over Merryville this past Thursday.
Now, the only thing that stands in their way of a district title showdown with league leader Oberlin in the final regular season game is Gueydan (3-5, 2-3). A win over the Bears tonight at home gives the Bearcats a shot at spoiling Oberlin’s perfect record and would secure the district championship.
Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“Right now our focus has to be on Gueydan,” stated Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “They are a hard-nosed football team. When you look at their record, you don’t think that they could pose a threat, but they beat some good football teams this season. They are an I-formation football team and will try to run the ball. We just have to come out ready to play, especially on a short week.”
A huge bright spot for Basile in their current win streak has been the play of the offense. Over the last three games, the Bearcats are averaging 393.7 total yards per game, with the majority of those yards coming via the running game.
Last week against Merryville, Basile rushed for 397 yards as a team. But, probably the most important stat in that game was the fact that the Bearcats had three running backs collect over 100 yards on the ground.
“I thought we were in total control of the game from the start,” said Bertrand. “Our running game allowed us to control the ball and open up a lead on Merryville. Right now our offense is clicking because we are healthy and we are distributing the ball to different guys in the run game. That makes it difficult for opponents to key in on one person.”
When asked what will the focus for his team be when they take the field against Gueydan tomorrow night, Bertrand was very succinct in his answer.
“Stop their offense from scoring.”
Gueydan comes into the game only averaging 13.5 points per game. However, the Bears are scoring over 20 points per game in their last three games; all wins.
Basile will have to exploit a vulnerable Gueydan defense that surrenders 22.4 points per game. The Bears have had four opponents score 25 or more points against them.
