Lady Panthers earn run-rule district win over Lady Bears

PINE PRAIRIE -- It is quite unusual for a team’s first game of the year to also be their first district game of the year.
But, when you have the number of teams (7) competing in District 5-3A, those two worlds must collide.
On Thursday, those two worlds collided for the Pine Prairie Lady Panther softball team as they hosted the Church Point Lady Bears. Pine Prairie made a huge impression on the other teams in the league, knocking off Church Point 14-1 in a run-rule win.
Senior hurler, Karli Ortego, took to the mound to begin the game for the Lady Panthers and promptly got the first Lady Bear batter to ground out. After an error allowed the next batter for Church Point to reach base, Ortego struck out the next Lady Bear, gave up a walk to batter No. 4 and enticed a ground out to end the inning.
It did not take Pine Prairie long to get on the board, as Jacie McFarlain doubled to lead things off for the Lady Panthers and scored on a single from Abby Fontenot to take the 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
Pine Prairie added three more runs in the second inning, four more runs in the third inning and finished out the contest by plating six runs in the their fourth at bat.
McFalain led all Lady Panthers at the plate, going three for four with four RBI.
Ortego picked up the win on the mound.
