VPPD reports a shooting on E Cotton St

Chief Neal Lartigue reports a shooting which injured one.

On December 28, 2020 at approximately 9:15, Officers with the Ville Platte Police Department responded to the 100 block of East Cotton Street for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival Officers learned that a homeowner confronted 5 black male juveniles in his yard and the juveniles armed with a metal pipe, began beating the homeowner in the head while demanding money. As the homeowner retreated back to his residence, one of the juveniles shot toward the homeowner. A five year old child was shot in the shoulder during the incident.

The injured child was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Women's and Children's Hospital Lafayette for treatment. The child is stable at this time. The homeowner suffered injuries to his eye, face and head and was treated at Mercy Regional Hospital and released.

The shooting remains under investigation and we will update as more information becomes available.
