Storm water wreaks havoc on sewer; vaccine is offered today

With recent storms that hit the area, more problems arose with the sewer system in Chataignier.
Village Administrator Gail McDavid reported, during the council meeting held Monday, the sewer plant is down because of the storm water. “The storm water overloaded the filter system,” he said.
According to McDavid, the system is designed to handle 55 gallons per minute. However, over the previous two days, it was handling 150 to 175 gallons per minute.
“It put trash into the pump and clogged it up,” said McDavid.
Other parts of the sewer system are down or waiting on parts. As a result, McDavid said, “extensive work needs to be done on our collection lines on the sewer system in the village.” He added, “There are some major underground leaks somewhere that allows the storm water to get in there.”
The needed work, however, would cost multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Councilman J.B. Brasseaux acknowledged the problem will not go away, and McDavid suggested the village look into getting a grant for work to the sewer system.
Mayor Justin Darbonne said he will look into what the village can do. Later in the meeting, he reported Moderna vaccines will be available today at the Chataignier Village Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no registration. The second dose of the vaccine will be available next month.
